Notes for Alexander P. Hussey
Subject: Hawaiian Husseys

I have not heard from the Husseys lately so I thought I would stir the
pot with a story from "The Hussey Manuscript" which I found in the
Nantucket Hist. Soc. files.

Alexander Pollard Hussey, son of Joseph Starbuck Hussey and Lydia E.
(Pollard) Hussey was b. in 1825 on Nantucket. He signed on as a ship's
carpenter on the "Columbus" of Fairhaven, MA, (across the harbor from
New Bedford). When signing his papers for the voyage he gave and swore
that he was age 22, 5'6 1/2", Complexion: Dark; eyes: blue. The ship
was under the command of Captain Fish and sailed on Nov. 13, 1843 for
the Northwest Pacific Ocean for whaling. The first mate was Harvey Cole
who died at sea in 1844.

After a very successful voyage of 23 months, the "Columbus" arrived in
Hawaii on October 12, 1845 with 800 barrels of sperm oil, 2400 barrels
of whale oil and 14000 lbs of whale bone. It remained there until
November 24, 1845 when it sailed for home, arriving in Fairhaven on
April 13, 1846.

Alexsander was apparently taken with the islands, (who isn't?) for he
returned as a carpenter for a Mission Church, (probably Quaker). He was
married on March 2, 1851 while a resident of Hamakua, Hawaii to Emilia.
His bride proved unfaithful, and he gave her a bill of divorcement.
Apparantly ther were no children born to this union.

Alexander remarried on September 17, 1862 to Makanoe Kaaikaula
Kaleikauwilah. The groom was then a resident of North Kohala, Hawaii.
The bride was Hawaiian royalty. At age 5 she was betrothed to the son
of a Hawaiian king, but her father objected to the contracted marriage
and sent her to the jungle in hiding under the care of an older brother.
The brother built a temple for her in the jungel and surrounded it with
a stone wall 15 feet high, with only a narrow passageway for an entry.
He stationed himself above the entryway and killed at least one of the
king's soldiers who were searching for Makanoe by lassoing him and
hanging him with the noose. Later Makanoe was placed in a school
operated by the church mission for her protecvtion. She remained in the
school until Alexander Hussey made his proposal of marriage. Alexander
became a master carpenter in North Kohala District and died there on
April 9, 1896. He was buried at Nuilii, Hawaii on the northwestern
extremity of the island. His wife died ther also date unknown. They
had 13 children and today the islands are awash in their progeny.

I have quite a bit more info on this Hussey branch, any Hussey Howli out
there?
